Meet Kit - The Story.
Kit was bought at a flea market in Kentucky by a family who thought owning a fox as a pet would be fun. They took him everywhere and posted his photos online. Thankfully, Fish & Wildlife noticed and confiscated Kit, as foxes shouldn’t be kept as pets. A wildlife officer brought him to a veterinarian and rehabilitator, who named him Kit and nursed him back to health. The vet later contacted a classmate, now our zoo vet, to provide Kit with a proper home.
After all the paperwork with F/W was done, Kit found himself on a trip up to Popcorn Park Refuge. Kit is a silver fox which is most commonly bred for the fur trade, and sometimes also sold as pets. He is too domesticated to ever be released into the wild where he is native to, but we are happy to add him to our family. We only hope his story can bring light to the fox trade industry that breeds and kills foxes like Kit to be made into someone's fur coat. The story of domesticated silver foxes started in Siberia in the 1950s. Scientists wanted to see if foxes could be tamed like dogs, so they bred the friendliest ones over time. Slowly, the foxes changed. They started wagging their tails, had floppy ears, and acted playful, almost like puppies.It’s a simple but amazing story about how something wild can adapt and grow.
